Named after one of the most prolific Canadian cartoonists of the 20th Century, the 2005 Doug Wright Awards will honour the best in this country’s vivid and diverse field of comics.

Wright, whose work ran in newspapers and magazines from the 1940s to the 1980s, wrote and drew strips that were unmistakably Canadian yet universally appealing. A consummate craftsman, Wright managed to carve out a successful career while remaining in his own country.

The 2005 Wrights will boast two categories to recognise work by Canadian cartoonists published from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31 2004.

The Best Book award will include any comic book, graphic novel or collected work published in 2004, with a focus on established cartoonists (ie. writer/artists). The Best Emerging Talent award will include cartoonists who have been published for the first time or have displayed significant growth in their work.

It will also feature five inductees into a Canadian Cartooning Hall of Fame to be called “Giants of the North.”

Modelled on traditional book awards, The Wrights will be decided on by a jury that will include Canadian authors, broadcasters, cartoonists and filmmakers who have shown an appreciation of the comics form.

The jurors for 2005 are: cartoonist Chester Brown (Louis Riel, Ed The Happy Clown), actor/director Don McKellar (Childstar, Last Night), director Jerry Ciccoritti (Trudeau, Lives of the Saints), Globe and Mail books reporter Rebecca Caldwell, & writer and CBC broadcaster Nora Young.
