Submissions to the 2020 Doug Wright Awards are now open. Books published between January 1 and December 31, 2019, of any shape or size, in which illustrations are integral to the story, are eligible to enter, provided all creators are Canadian citizens (or permanent residents). Visit the Submissions page of the Doug Wright Awards Web site for a complete breakdown of categories, entry rules, submission requirements, deadlines, and everything else you need to know. Entries to the 2020 Doug Wright Awards must be submitted by January 17, 2020, and hard copies received by January 24, 2020.

There are a few changes this year that creators and publishers will want to be aware of:

Online submissions
All books considered for the 2020 Doug Wright Awards must be entered by their creator or publisher, via our new online portal. Please see the Submissions page of the Doug Wright Awards Web site for complete details.

Introducing the Egghead—the Doug Wright Award for best kids’ book
Due to popular demand, we have introduced a new category: the Egghead, an award for the year’s best book for kids aged 0–12. Books entered into this category are still eligible for the Doug Wright Award for best book. (Books aimed at young adults, aged 13–17, will continue to be considered in the best book category alongside books for those aged 18 and older.)

Entry fees
Beginning this year there is a fee of $15 per entry for the best book and best kids’s book categories. It is our wish that this fee not hinder any creator from entering, and it will be waived for any self-published or independent creator(s) who genuinely can not afford it. There is no fee to enter either the Nipper or Pigskin Peters awards.

Criteria changes for the Nipper and Pigskin Peters
This year, the Nipper reverts back to its original mandate as the Doug Wright Award for emerging talent, while the Pigskin Peters changes its focus slightly to become the Doug Wright Award for best small or micro-press book. Please see the Submissions page of the Doug Wright Awards Web site for complete details.

Launching a new process as we have this year is bound to have a few wrinkles. Please address any and all questions or comments to dougwrightawards@gmail.com.
